Followers of the dictator Justo Rufino Barrios (1873-85), they gained Catholic Church lands which had been confiscated, to become the nation's richest landowners, and built their agricultural empire on coffee and sugar. Don Manuel M. Herrera issued his first tokens in 1871 and adopted the bee (for its industriousness) as the family symbol. He had his attractive tokens made in Paris and in San Francisco. |

Denmark Silver Jeton c1670 Peder Griffenfeld |
139.99 |
|
Silver jetton, approx 28mm across, struck privately by and for Peder Schumacher Griffenfeld (1635-1699). Reference on this item can be found in "Münzen- und Medaillen-Cabinet des Jusitzraihs Reimmann" published by Adolph Hess in 1892, #8957. "MISURATI" with compass, and "REVERENTER HABE" with Fortuna.
Peder Schumacher was the son of pub-owner Joachim Schumacher but attained the rank and position of Count and Chancellor. Peder Schumacher, who was unusually intelligent, studied in Copenhagen, Rostock, Dresden, Leiden and Oxford. He was Frederik III's secretary and in 1668 he became councillor; he prepared the Danish Act of Succession, the constitution of the absolutist monarchy. In 1673 he was appointed Count with the name Griffenfeld, and the year after he became Chancellor, the highest ranking official in the Kingdom.
I had also seen references to this item as having been from Ernst August 1679-1698, Bischof von Osnabrück, but I saw a couple attributing it to Denmark. |
