Herrera Family Holdings: The Herreras have been called "the wealthiest of all the Guatemala oligarchs." Followers of the dictator Justo Rufino Barrios (1873-85), they gained Catholic Church lands which had been confiscated, to become the nation's richest landowners, and built their agricultural empire on coffee and sugar. Don Manuel M. Herrera issued his first tokens in 1871 and adopted the bee (for its industriousness) as the family symbol. He had his attractive tokens made in Paris and in San Francisco. |

In Greek mythology, Harpocrates is the god of silence. Harpocrates was adapted by the Greeks from the Egyptian child god Horus. To the ancient Egyptians, Horus represented the new-born Sun, rising each day at dawn. When the Greeks conquered Egypt under Alexander the Great, they transformed the Egyptian Horus into their Hellenistic god known as Harpocrates. Egyptian statues represent the child Horus, pictured as a naked boy with his finger on his mouth, a realization of the hieroglyph for "child" that is unrelated to the Greco-Roman and modern gesture for "silence". Misunderstanding this sign, the later Greeks and Roman poets made Harpocrates the god of Silence and Secrecy. |

From Chuck Lindsey, Ph.D.: This jeton and description have been fascinating me for some reason. I found a scanned copy of Dugniolle on Google Books, which didn’t help much. The only reference I can find to “Hambyze” is on p. 535 of _Histoire des Troubles des Pays-Bas_ by M. Renon de France (1889), which basically (as best as I can tell from my minimal French) discusses the Duke of Anjou’s putting down some rebellion in Flanders around 1580. I think this jeton was struck to commemorate the “French Fury” of January 1583, and the “silly silly” is intended to derogate the two figures at the top of the coin, who (I think) are probably the Duke of Anjou and William of Orange (or possibly Phillip of Spain). The woman on the other side bears a resemblance (to me) of an engraving by Philip Galle, who lived in Antwerp at that time. You can find the engraving and his bio at

In the 1840s these were struck with dates under Victoria's busts, so these are probably struck in 1837 or a little after. The words TO HANOVER are a satirical reference to the Duke of Cumberland, who became ruler in the German kingdom of Hanover, to which Victoria was denied succession due to her sex. |
